Everybody's Got The Fever...
Last week Thursday saw the opening night of UK smash hit show Strictly Tap Dance Fever at The Joburg Theatre and let me tell you something; a more talented cast than this you won't find anywhere soon!
Within the first few seconds of the show, I had forgotten about the idiot in his beemer who stole my parking spot with screeching tyres earlier. With vibrant songs such as Hit The Road Jack, 42nd Street and Fever, I was blown away by lead singers Lara Denning, Jon Hawkins and Simon Schofield (who is the voice behind You, the theme song of Bakgat! 2 and who's also known for being part of The Twelve Tenors). Not to mention the effortless performances by the dancers! Geez, I was astonished by what they were capable of doing - you have to see it to know what I'm talking about... Unfortunately, Amor Vittone's rather below par performance almost chased away my new-found happiness. This is Amor's first time back on the theatre stage in about ten years and even though she seemed to have mastered the dance routines, she resembled a deer in headlights more than once during the show.
That said, I've never seen tap dancing like this before! The musical classics mashed with modern day beat will have you tapping your toes from beginning to end, and - if you're anything like me - I can guarantee you'll try a few of the steps afterwards (please just do it in the comfort of your own home or in the bathrooms at the theatre - NOT in front of the leaving crowd like I did...)!
Strictly Tap Dance Fever runs Tuesdays to Fridays at 20:00, Saturdays at 15:00 and 20:00 and Sundays at 16:00. Tickets available at Computicket.
See you there!

When The Vault Opens, Where Will You Be?
Blazing onto the Johannesburg stage in March is the ground breaking original rock musical Streets Of Gold - The Musical, presented by AngloGold Ashanti in association with The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City Casino, for 10 performances only from March 24 to April 3, 2011.
Streets Of Gold tells a rousing story of the fight for freedom and love in a world choked by corruption and greed.
Beautiful, brooding Cassandra (Samantha Peo) has fled her downtown lair and is on the run from an enraged Prefect Flora Von Higgins (Fiona Ramsay), a powerful leader of the Global Union Of Nations (GUN). Perched on the GUN's Most Wanted List, Cassandra swiped the precious gold bracelet-key from under Prefect's nose after her very public and botched attempt to claim the world's long lost gold. To make matters worse, even if the pesky rebel can be tracked down and the key recovered, Flora has triggered the vault's self-destruct countdown. Jabulani Bond (Tumisho Masha) will have to fetch the key and retrieve some of her wounded pride. While holding out hope that her mischievous daughter Lily (Carmen Pretorius) will defect from the Gold Liberation Front (GLF), Flora plots her next move with Defense Minister Moro (Mark Richardson), a man with a salacious appetite for gold and the treacherous temptress Sheba (Amor Vittone). Cassandra escapes capture and reaches GLF leader Viddy Civille (Shaun V). Whether their meeting is destined to change their lives or the world, will be known when the skillful Ngudu 9's (Phumi MnCayi) rolls the dice.
In a first for a South African rock musical, eight of SA's most talented acts will bring these exciting characters to life. This all-star cast was achieved through the gravity of music, script and depth of the characters.
With its comic book and film noir inspiration, Streets Of Gold is vibrant with design; from award-winning gold jewellery and accessory design to haute couture costume, hair and make-up creations and fascinating animation. The show will include the AuDITIONS Urban Tribes gold jewellery collection and out-of-this-world costume design by fashion designer Suzaan Heyns.
Barbed satire written by Alan Swerdlow with music composed by Jon Savage and Jane Breetzke of Cassette, Streets Of Gold has a completely unique local, multi verse identity.
The musical score is based on contemporary rock with varied influence from industrial, traditional and contemporary to kwaito, hip-hop and Latin. Arranged by musical director Brian Schimmel, the songs have each been developed with the characters or collective cast in mind and will be played during the performances by a seven-piece band. Big rock guitar and Cassette's signature keyboard sound threads through the music from beginning to end.
Still reeling from the recent global recession, Streets Of Gold - The Musical will have audiences pondering, chuckling and cheering. As befits good musical theatre, this satire pokes fun at politicians and plays on the ever-present tension between political institutions and agents of change. Set in a parallel universe, this Johannesburg may look strange but when it comes to jockeying and politicking, the city at the heart of Streets Of Gold is not so different from the Johannesburg that exists in our world.
Streets Of Gold - The Musical offers a premium seat at the theatre, an haute couture fashion and jewellery show and a heart-pounding rock concert seamlessly woven into a single, delightful performance.

Tickets available at Computicket.

Happy Freakin' Valentine's Day
To me, the 14th of February is just another day. The only thing I look forward to is the marked-down chocolates on February 15. Don't get me wrong; when I was still at school I couldn't wait to receive uprooted plant life and sugar-saturated caffeinated blocks of fat on Valentine's Day. It became some sort of competition in high school amongst girls to see who received the most flowers, cards and chocolates from their "secret admirers". Now I just wish someone would find Cupid already and b*tch slap the little punk!
Yes, I am "one of those" people who does not celebrate the unimaginative, consumerist-oriented and entirely arbitrary, manipulative and shallow interpretation of "romance day". Why? Here comes the cliche: every day should be a celebration of love. Not only must you show that "special someone" daily how you feel, but I try to tell my friends and family every day that I love them.
It's not that I'm boycotting this corporate-mandated "holiday" - I will be donating some of my time (due to a lack of millions in my bank account) to various charities during the month of love. Walking an abused dog or playing with an abandoned child to me means so much more than buying over-priced chocolates and cheesy cards.
That said, I've compiled a list of songs by some of my favourite local artists which aren't necessarily "love songs", but they speak to my heart in an inexplicable way - reminding me that there's more to love than just a date on a calendar.
I hope you enjoy it!
Much love,
Izzy

Still Pushing The Awesome Button
I went to the launch of Sergeant Fu's debut album, Push The Awesome Button in October last year and since then I've been spreading the awesomeness through my open car windows on every possible road in Jozi.
I recently had a chat with Matt and Ryno - who write, record and produce their own music - to find out what they're up to this year and why 2011 is the year of the Fu...
What has been going on in the world of Sergeant Fu since your album launch last year?
There has been some incredible news already this year - our debut album has been licensed in New Zealand! That means the Kiwis will be receiving the feel-good vibes of Sergeant Fu on their radios, TVs and in their stores! Another big project we are working on at the moment is a musical called The Wizard Of Fu - it will be a collaboration between Sergeant Fu and Stageworx Performing Arts School. We don't want to give too much awesome information away right now but you can catch this production at the Pro Musica Theatre in July. 2011 is also seeing the growth of the band from 2 members to 4; we have had the privilege of playing with Rudo (bass) and Herman (drums) the last few months and they are totally part of the new vibe!
Where do you draw your influences from?
Matt: When I was a kid I had a mad obsession with Weird Al Yankovic. I begged my dad every time he went overseas to please pick up his albums that weren't available in SA at that time - I knew all the words! And then when I was about 13-years-old I discovered Hanson... or did they discover me? I dunno but I was totally mesmerised by the catchy melody of Mmmbop and I remember that music making me feel so damn good for days on end! So you could say that Sergeant Fu is a clever mixture between Weird Al Yankovic and Hanson in a very old-school way - although in the same breath we feel that the music is still very current.
Ryno: I've always listened to a very vast selection of music; from jazz to metal... I was generally just influenced by all styles of music while growing up. These days it's stuff like Snow Patrol, The Temper Trap, One Republic - with the odd boogie to Beyonce in those "stuck-in-traffic" moments!
Who inspires you personally as a vocalist/guitarist?
Matt: As a vocalist I tend to get inspired by all those rockers who made it big despite people telling them that they couldn't sing. Bono is one of them!
Ryno: I guess guys like John Mayer and The Edge played a big part for me.
What is your favourite Sergeant Fu song?
Matt: Wow, hard to pick but if I had to I'd say Social Paraplegic! The song is pretty special to me as it was written about Ryno and myself's attempt at picking up chicks at Casablanca one night!
Ryno: I think it's Best Song In The World... We had a lot of fun when we wrote and recorded that one!
What does a typical day in the life of Sergeant Fu look like?
Well, a really good day in the life of Sergeant Fu would start out with a Sergeant Fu-drink; Tropika with a single shot of Jagermeister - trust me, it's nice! And when we are writing and recording our new tunes, we are chilling by the pool with a hubbly and our guitars and a piece of paper. We often collab with The Godfather; he is a brilliant bouncing board for all of our ideas!
What role does social media play in your success?
A huge role! Sergeant Fu has been mostly a viral message. When we posted our Vuvuzela music video on YouTube we had no idea what was to come! We've had over 300 000 collective views on that video. Our video was reposted with Portuguese subtitles and we started receiving fan mail in Portuguese! Our video was also featured on the home page of YouTube in Brazil! So yeah, the social media platforms are intensely valuable for us as a band. It makes our work a lot easier - the fans tell other people about us and we don't need to spend as much money on marketing... Hooray!
What do you think of downloading music online?
I think it's cool. I'm really glad about it, actually! That means people from all over the world can have access to the music we write. Otherwise they would never have been able to hear it or listen to it. We have had downloads on our album from New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, USA, Europe and even Zimbabwe! Boom! Lovin' it!
What makes Sergeant Fu different from any other band currently on the scene?
We went o a quest to create a new music genre called "feel-good" and I feel that we successfully pulled it out of the hat! Oh yes, and I really feel that our mascot, Super Duck, sets us apart! He has recently acquired a life partner in Mrs Duck; she is keeping him in line and soon after they have kids we should hypothetically have all our ducks in a row...
Has anyone ever mistaken you for a member of another band?
Ryno: The drummer from The Parlotones! I think I'm just gonna start faking his signature and ride that wave a bit. Nobody will even know! Ha ha!
What's the best and worst thing about playing in clubs?
Best thing; Jagermeister. Worst thing; Canilla (Cane and Tequila).
Do you have day jobs and how do they compare with what you wanted to be when you grew up?
Matt: I teach songwriting and drums during the day and they support my dream of making music and building incredible projects. So I am living my dream, but I'm no Richard Branson just yet!
Ryno: I run my recording studio full-time which is exactly what I wanted to do when I was younger!
Do you ever embarrass each other in public?
Matt: Every time I dance I embarrass whoever is around me!
Ryno: Me too... it's bad, hey!
Would you rather have superpowers or access to Oprah's bank account?
Matt: I would go with Oprah's bank account! Show me the long dollar!
Ryno: I probably have to say Oprah, but how awesome would it be to be able to fly...?
Who did you get your last sms from and what did it say?
Matt: My one drum student and it reads, "10:15 till 11:00?" - yip, life-changing stuff!
Ryno: Ha ha, it's from Rudo (the bassist) saying that a fly got stuck inside his vegetable steamer... general chit-chat stuff.
Your favourite one-liner?
Matt: "What do you call a girl who falls face-first onto the stove? Patty." Don't be jealous and don't judge!
Ryno: "What do you call a coloured werewolf? Aweh-wolf." It's lame. I know.
What do you have planned for the rest of 2011?
We are looking at doing some more high school shows this year. The kids out there are digging the tunes so we want to go to them so they don't have to try fake IDs to get into clubs. We will obviously still do club gigs here and there and we would love to play Joburg Day... just putting it out there!
Come on, push the awesome button... I know you want to!

BREAKING NEWS!
Strictly Tap Dance Fever (exclusively at The Mandela @ Joburg Theatre from February 15 - March 6) now provides even more pizazz!
With just one week to go before the Strictly Tap Dance Fever cast arrives on stage direct from their UK tour, the Joburg Theatre has announced that not only will the cast feature 12 dancers ready to dazzle the audience, but three world renowned singers will be joining them on stage - ready to charm the Joburg public with their wonderful vocals.
A late cast confirmation brings back a Joburg Theatre crowd favourite, Simon Schofield, who thrilled audiences as part of The Twelve Tenors in February 2010 and proved so popular with those who saw him perform that he was immediately invited to return to South Africa in May to record the main love theme for the popular local teen movie BAKGAT! 2 - which was released to great success in September last year. "I fell in love with South Africa and its people during my first visit to your wonderful country a year ago, and even then I planned to return as often as my schedule allowed. I'm thrilled to be able to join the cast of Strictly Tap Dance Fever so that I can once again experience the joy of performing for Joburg Theatre audiences. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with everyone soon," says Simon. Joining Simon on stage to divide the vocals will be the talented Jon Hawkins and impressive Lara Denning.
Audiences will be taken on a non-stop, adrenalin-driven journey of pure delight and nostalgia, performing hit after hit including Minnie The Moocher; Hit The Road, Jack; Bye Bye Love, Mr Bojangles, Fever, I Got Rhythm, I Love Rock 'n Roll and many others, whilst the dancers dazzle with their tap prowess. Joining the cast on stage intermittently through the show will be local guest celebrity artist Amor Vittone, who will entertain with some of her own original tracks as well as join the other vocalists for group numbers.
Starting in the era when Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were the stars of the day, the show tap dances its way through history, thrilling and exciting audiences with the vibrant tap dance styles that entertained generations through the ages. This brand new production for 2011 features fantastic musical classics mashed with modern day beat. Acapella tap sounds can be heard as the show opens and - as the taps build - so does the energy and spectacle. Soon you discover there is so much more than tap in this show: swing, jive and sensational singers add to the cocktail of pure showbiz heaven.
Strictly Tap Dance Fever is brought to you by Spirit Productions - the people that brought us two of Joburg Theatre’s highest-grossing and most popular shows of the past decade: Spirit Of The Dance and Le Grand Cirque.
Tickets are available at Computicket and you can click HERE to view a taste of what to expect.
Simon Schofield started performing from a young age playing Gavroche in Les Miserable (Edinburgh playhouse), and making his West End debut at 12 as the title role in Oliver! (London Palladium, original cast). Other theatre credits include Frankie Vallie in Rock Around The Clock (Monte Carlo and UK tour), Robin Hood Prince Of Sherwood (Manchester) and many more. Jon Hawkins trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts graduating with Honours in 2005. His credits include Jerry Lee Lewis in Rock Around The Clock (UK/Europe tour), Sky in Mamma Mia! (international tour) and many more. Visit Jon online for more information.
Lara Denning trained at Mountview Theatre School in London. Theatre credits include Dirty Dancing in Concert (UK tour), Aladdin and many more. For more information on Lara, click HERE.

Artist Q&A: Jak De Priester
Happy Tuesday, y'all!
Okay, okay - there's nothing happy about it, I know. Don't blame me for trying! If you're suffering from a serious bout of post-weekend blues, here's something to cheer you up (hopefully)!
Jak De Priester is an established name in the local music industry and his tremendous talent knows no bounds. He first drew attention in 2003 after winning the ATKV Crescendo Competition and now Jak can add five albums, one poetry collection, an Afrikaans coffee table word art book and numerous theatre productions to his impressive CV. I had a quick chat with him about his career.
You've come a long way since releasing the hit Sally Williams Nougat in 2003. What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
The releases of each of my albums were are highlights to me, and then touring - lots of shows. Big shows and smaller shows; there are too many moments to highlight only one.
What can fans expect from you in 2011?
I will collaborate with Koos Kombuis in a new production called Brooklyn Babalaas.
A lot of people can relate to your lyrics. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everyday life situations! Just being alive is inspiration. Emotions I experience every day...
What do you enjoy most; singing or the writing process?
Writing is like giving birth, singing is like seeing that child graduate.
If you didn't make singing your career, what would you be doing?
I am not sure... Try to be an actor?
You are actively involved with the Tyger Bear charity. What does that mean to you?
If my voice can help children, it's a blessing!
You are also a husband and father. How do you juggle those roles with your music career?
I love my wife, I love my child and I love being a muso and performer.
Has anyone ever mistaken you for a member of another band?
Yes, unfortunately - but not for the handsome ones!
Do you have any advice for aspiring solo artists?
It's all about songs! But stay true to yourself, write a lot and practise your instrument!
Sally Williams Nougat, the song that made Jak an instant favourite in the music industry:

Artist Q&A: The Arrows
Happy Tuesday, peeps!
I'm a bit fragile today after celebrating my 26th birthday in Mexican style last night, so I thought the only thing that would make the suffering better is to have a chat with The Arrows.
Enjoy!
xxx
What can fans expect from you in 2011?
Hopefully the few shows we are managing to play around South Africa will be packed with passion and loads of energy! Our fans will hear songs off our album, Make Believe plus a few extra features that will hopefully get them dancing.
Why "The Arrows"?
Pam had a dream one night that she was an arrow being shot all over different landscapes. It was a very vivid and powerful dream. Then, the next day at rehearsal - without knowing about Pam's dream - Christie suggested the name "The Arrows". At this point they both clicked and realised it must be destiny.
Favourite club to gig at?
Galaxy in Cape Town is absolutely incredible! Mercury in Cape Town is also rad. For more intimate concerts, we really like Zula Bar.
What's the best thing about being in a band?
Hearing people sing your songs and knowing that you're playing something that really connected with them.
What are some of the challenges you face as an all-girl band in today's music scene?
Firstly, the people expect us to be half undressed, as if we're the Pussycat Dolls or something. People don't expect us to understand that much about music or electronics for that matter.
Most embarrassing moment on stage?
The one time Pam fell of the stage at Zula Bar after a show and twisted her ankle really badly. Ironically, she was one of the only sober people in the room!
When you get the time, which band do you go watch?
Desmond & The Tutu's, The Dirty Skirts and HHP.
Would you rather date a politician or lose your instruments?
There are a hell of a lot worse things than having to date a politician.
Worst pick-up line you've ever heard?
"Awesome gig! For a girl you were pretty good."
